Chaga tea can be used just as well externally as internally. Chaga mushrooms are most often found growing on birch trees, where it absorbs an extremely beneficial compound called betulin. This compound has been shown to reduce inflammation and has anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties. It even helps to stimulate the growth of new, healthy skin cells. Other constituents found in chaga include beta glucans, which promote immune function and further ease inflammation. Chaga tea also protects against burns, and helps skin to maintain its firmness and elasticity, thus reducing the formation of wrinkles. It can even help to reduce allergic skin reactions, such as a rash, and offers mild pain relief. This makes chaga an excellent natural treatment for various common skin conditions, including acne and eczema.
Sweetgrass as an oil extract has anti-inflammatory benefits. It is know historically to assist with chapping and wind burn. It's properties are soothing and purifying.
Lemon Balm is sometimes used in creams for cold sores. However, its uses in skincare go wider than that given the plant’s strong anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action. Lemon balm is classified as being calming, soothing, healing and tightening on the skin, whilst also stimulating circulation. It is thought to be great for acne and sunburned skin. Research has found that one of the advantages of skincare application of lemon balm is the ability of two of its compounds, caffeic acid and ferulic acid, to penetrate through the top layers into the deeper cutaneous layers of the skin and provide protection against UV radiation-induced skin damage (Saija et al., 1999). Lemon balm is also high in flavonoids, which have an antioxidant effect. Other skin benefits can be attributed to the herb’s tannins, which are astringent and contribute to the lemon balm’s antimicrobial effects.
